Yukos Lawyer Awaiting Decision On Prison Release

Svetlana Bakhmina leaves a Moscow court in 2005.

MOSCOW -- The imprisoned former Yukos lawyer Svetlana Bakhmina is awaiting a court decision on her possible early release.

Bakhmina was found guilty of tax evasion and embezzlement and sentenced to seven years in jail in 2006.

Since last year she has been trying to obtain an early release.

Russia's intelligentsia and rights activists have been campaigning for her early release since then.

Her lawyer, Roman Golovkin, told RFE/RL's Russian Service that Moscow’s Preobrazhensky Court will decide Bakhmina’s possible early release in about two months.

In the past, the Zubo-Poliyanskiy Regional Court in the Russian Republic of Mordovia -- where Bakhmina served her term until November 2008 -- had rejected her application for an early release. Bakhmina was then transferred to Moscow, where she gave birth to a child.
