BATUMI, Georgia -- The Georgia Black Sea port of Batumi has renamed a main street in the city after late Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili declared on May 28 at a ceremony in Batumi that during Georgia's August 2008 war with Russia, Kaczynski showed no fear and openly supported Tbilisi. He added that the street will be "one of the most beautiful avenues in Europe."
The Batumi city council voted on May 25 to rename one of the main streets along Batumi Boulevard after the Kachynskis, who died along with dozens of other prominent Poles in a plane crash near the Russian city of Smolensk on April 10.
Kaczynski was part of a small group of Central European leaders who flew to Tbilisi in a show of support for Georgia immediately after the Russian-Georgian conflict in South Ossetia.
The Tbilisi city council also announced on April 27 that it will rename a street after Kaczynski, who was elected Polish president in 2005.
