Greek Policeman 'Guilty' In Teen Death That Sparked Riots

A Greek policeman has been convicted of murder for the shooting of a teenager that sparked riots in Greece in 2008.

The policeman, Epaminondras Korkoneas, was ordered to spend his life in prison in the subsequent sentencing later in the day.

A second policeman, Vassilios Saraliotis, was convicted of complicity and given a 10-year sentence.

The defense has pledged to appeal the court's decision.

Fifteen-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was killed during antigovernment protests in Athens in December 2008.

His death sparked two weeks of riots across Greece.

A far-left extremist group threatened to kill Korkoneas, prompting authorities to relocate the trial from Athens to the town of Amfisa, some 200 kilometers west of the capital.
