Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has confirmed that a top Southeast Asian militant suspected of helping plan the 2002 Bali bombings has been shot dead by police in a raid near Jakarta.
Yudhoyono said in a speech to Australian lawmakers today in Canberra that the militant group Jemaah Islamiah's top bomb technician, known as Dulmatin, had been killed in the raid on March 9.
The U.S. government has described Dulmatin as having been trained in Al-Qaeda terrorist camps in Afghanistan.
It was not immediately clear if anyone is eligible for a $10 million reward that has been offered for Dulmatin's capture by the U.S. government.
Dulmatin was wanted in connection with the 2002 suicide bomb attacks that targeted two Bali nightclubs that were popular with Westerners, killing 202 people, in the deadliest terrorist attack ever in Indonesia.
