PRISTINA -- Police in Kosovo say at least two people were injured September 5 in a massive brawl in the Zvecan municipality of northern Kosovo, RFE/RL's Balkan Service reports.
Police did not say what caused the fight, which they said involved about 100 Kosovo Serbs from Mitrovica and Zvecan.
The Kosovo police force was unable to contain the violence and called in the European Union's Rule of Law Mission, an advising force with a primarily international staff, which brought the situation under control.
Perpetrators threw stones and bottles at police, but no injuries were reported by police or EU personnel.
An explosion also took place in Zvecan at an Albanian-owned bakery around the same time as the fight, but police found no connection between the two events.
Northern Kosovo is populated mainly by Serbs, and while tensions in the region usually run between Kosovo Serbs and ethnic Albanians, rivalries between Serb groups is not unusual.
Ethnic Albanians make up more than 90 percent of the population of Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has since been recognized by 69 countries. Belgrade disputes the declaration and says Kosovo is still a Serbian province.
