Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Italy has received a formal apology from Serbia following violent clashes that forced the cancelation of a Euro 2012 qualifying match between the two countries.
On October 13, Frattini said he had received a phone call from Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, who presented "a formal apology from the government."
Clashes overnight between Serbian fans and Italian police in Genoa in northern Italy injured 16 people, including two police officers. At least 17 people were arrested.
The match planned for October 12 had to be canceled after just six minutes of play.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, however, criticized what he said was the Italian police's failure to prevent the violence.
European football governing body UEFA has opened an investigation into the violence.
