ALMATY -- Well-known Kazakh public figure Murat Auezov and opposition Azat Party official Bolat Abilov have called on Kazakh officials to provide proper medical treatment to Mukhtar Dzhakishev, the jailed former director of Kazakh uranium-production giant KazAtomProm, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
Auezov, Abilov, and Dzhakishev's wife, Dzhamilya Dzhakisheva, demanded that Kazakh officials perform "a proper medical examination of Dzhakishev to determine if he requires hospitalization."
Dzhakisheva says her husband's health condition has dramatically worsened in the past several weeks.
Dzhakishev and several of his associates were sacked from their positions at KazAtomProm -- Kazakhstan's major uranium-producing corporation -- and charged with corruption in May.
They have been kept in a detention center in Astana by Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) since being arrested.
KNB officials say Dzhakishev's health is satisfactory.
