Kyrgyz Authorities Hold Talks With Opposition

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz authorities held talks with opposition leaders in Bishkek today, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

One leader of the opposition, former parliament speaker Mukar Cholponbaev, told RFE/RL that the two sides exchanged critical statements.

The opposition said it raised human rights issues and the problems currently faced by some opposition leaders. Several have faced harassment and been charged with involvement in crimes.

The sides decided to resume talks on March 13.

It is expected that President Kurmanbek Bakiev will meet with the leaders of opposition eventually.

Cholponbaev said he does not expect any concrete results of the talks in general.
