BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz opposition has said that it will announce in mid-April its united choice of a candidate to run for president, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

The United People's Movement (OND) told RFE/RL that it held a special meeting to plan its upcoming activities regarding the selection of a candidate and possible protest actions.

Opposition Ak-Shumkar (White Falcon) party leader Temir Sariev -- whose party has joined with most major opposition parties under the OND umbrella -- also confirmed that the united opposition will announce a joint candidate next week.

The election, in which President Kurmanbek Bakiev is expected to seek reelection, is scheduled for July 23.
