Moldova's acting president has said that he will seek to recall Moldova's ambassador to Russia for expressing support for a communist boycott of a referendum that eventually failed.
Mihai Ghimpu, a leader of the four-party Alliance for European Integration who has been acting president since September 2009, made the remarks about Moldova's ambassador to Moscow, Andrei Neguta. The acting president said Neguta backed the communists' boycott call in interviews with Russian media.
The September 5 referendum -- called to decide whether the president should be elected by popular vote or continue to be elected by parliament -- collapsed due to low voter turnout.
The outcome was a defeat for the Alliance for European Integration -- which needed a vote for a direct presidential election to consolidate its power.
The failure of the referendum also is seen as a victory for Moldova's communists.
