MOSCOW -- Five activists have been detained in an elite Moscow district while protesting the construction of new buildings with underground parking lots, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
About a dozen activists from the Public Coalition to Protect Moscow blocked the construction works along Maly Kozikhinsky Street in the Patriarch's Ponds district. Police took away five activists while some 10 others remained at the site.
Among those detained was famous actress Tatyana Dogileva.
Coalition coordinator Roman Tkach told RFE/RL the activists would block construction work around the clock. Last month, the activists managed to halt construction of a new seven-story hotel in Patriarch's Ponds.
Several 19th-century buildings have been demolished to clear the way for the construction.
The Patriarch's Ponds district features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita."
