NATO says 30 insurgents were killed overnight as they tried to storm a combat outpost in eastern Afghanistan.
Five coalition soldiers were wounded in the attack in Paktika Province's Bermal district.
NATO says coalition forces called in close air support and air strikes to help repel the 1:30 a.m. local time assault, which began with assailants striking the military post from all sides using small arms, rocket-propelled grenades, and mortars.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Islamist group had attacked the base, claiming that six police outposts had been overrun in the attack.
Mujahid said Taliban fighters had inflicted "high casualties" on NATO and Afghan forces, but gave no further details. He said eight Taliban fighters had been killed.
