Sixty years ago in Washington, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was born. After World War II, fears of Soviet attack in Europe convinced Western leaders of the pressing need for a defensive military alliance. The world has changed dramatically since 1949, and NATO had to adapt constantly to deal with new and unanticipated global threats.
