The body of Maria Kaczynska was returned to Warsaw today to lie in state alongside that of her husband, President Lech Kaczynski.

Both were killed along with 94 others in a plane crash near Smolensk, in Russia, on April 10.

Kaczynski and his delegation of high-ranking military and civilian officials had been on their way to a memorial service at Katyn, near Smolensk, for 22,000 Poles killed by Soviet forces during World War II.

Russia's health minister today said almost half of the dead from last weekend's plane crash had already been identified.

President Kaczynski, who was the first to be identified, was flown back to Warsaw on April 11, where tens of thousands of Poles turned out to mourn him.

Kaczynski and his wife are expected to be buried this weekend.
