Russian prosecutors have reopened an investigation into a 2008 beating that left a journalist brain-damaged and confined to a wheelchair.
The case involves Mikhail Beketov, the former editor of the "Khimkinskaya pravda" weekly in the district of Khimki outside Moscow. Beketov's assailants were never found.
Beketov had been writing controversial reports about highway construction through a forest near Khimki.
On November 10, Beketov was found guilty of slander for allegations he made against the mayor of Khimki, Vladimir Strelchenko, during a September 2007 television interview.
The reopening of the Beketov investigation follows recent beatings of several other prominent journalists, including Oleg Kashin from the "Kommersant" business daily.
Supporters of Kashin have planned a rally in Moscow today to call for his attackers to be apprehended and punished.
