Russian Opposition Protesters Arrested Outside Duma

The five activists were demonstrating against amendments to the Federal Security Service law broadening its powers.

MOSCOW -- Six members of the Russian opposition party Yabloko have been arrested while protesting outside the State Duma, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

It was the second protest by Yabloko against a proposed bill that would increase the powers of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Leading Yabloko official Artur Grakhovsky and other protesters wore shirts that read "Tell the KGB no!" and handcuffed themselves to a fence around the Duma.

The bill debated today has been modified from the original draft.

The right for the FSB to summon people for questioning that it believes are preparing to commit a crime and punish those who do not appear for questioning has been removed from the legislation.

But the FSB would still allowed to fine or reprimand people for not following an FSB-issued order.

The third and final discussion of the bill is scheduled for July 16.
