Russian Police Sentenced For Assault, False Report

PENZA, Russia -- Five policemen have been sentenced in the western Russian city of Penza for assaulting a man and then writing a false police report, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The officers were given sentences of between three and 4 1/2 years in jail after being found guilty of attacking the man earlier this year and torturing him until he confessed to selling drugs.

They were also found guilty of submitting a false report that claimed they detained him and found drugs on him.

Two of the policemen pleaded guilty and have each paid 10,000 rubles ($340) to the victim in compensation. The others pleaded not guilty.
