IRKUTSK, Russia -- Hundreds of protesters in the eastern Russian city of Angarsk have demanded the resignation of Irkutsk Governor Dmitry Mezentsev, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The protest, held on April 26 outside the Irkutsk regional parliament building, was organized by the Angarsk branch of the Communist Party. It was unsanctioned but police did not intervene in the rally.

The protesters were also unhappy about sharp increases in utility prices and corruption.

A protest organizer, Sergei Brenyuk, said the demonstrators decided to rally in front of the Irkutsk parliament because Mezentsev has ignored earlier protests held almost every month in Angarsk by more than 1,000 local residents.
