PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suspected Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up today at the gate of the Press club in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing two people and wounding four, a city official said.
"It was a suicide attack. The bomber wanted to get into the Press club and when our police guard stopped him, he blew himself up," city police chief Liaqat Ali Khan told Reuters.
The guard was killed and four people were wounded, he said.
Top city official Azam Khan said two people had been killed.
Bombers have struck in Peshawar numerous times since the army launched an offensive against Pakistani Taliban militants in the South Waziristan region on the Afghan border, to the southwest of Peshawar.
The bombers' main targets have been the security forces.
Reporters have been attacked and killed in ethnic Pashtun tribal regions along the Afghan border, but today’s blast was the first on a reporters' club in a city.
A city reporter said militants had recently threatened to target journalists.
