Suspects Arrested In Kyrgyz Policeman's Death

Police are still searching for suspects involved in the ethnic clashes in Kyrgyzstan last month.

BISHKEK -- Three ethnic Uzbek citizens of Kyrgyzstan have been detained on suspicion of killing a policeman near Jalal-Abad during the violent ethnic clashes last month, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Deputy Interior Minister Melis Turganbaev told RFE/RL the three -- who were arrested in Bishkek on July 14 -- are from the southern city of Jalal-Abad.

He said they were detained in Bishkek with tickets for a flight to Russia.

Turganbaev said the policeman's body was found during a search by investigators for five local residents who disappeared during the unrest between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz.

The ethnic clashes in Jalal-Abad in mid-June left at least 50 people dead and some 700 injured.
