Tajik Deputies Approve Border Treaty With Uzbeks

DUSHANBE -- The Tajik parliament’s lower house has approved a 2002 Tajik-Uzbek border demarcation agreement, settling 85 percent of the border land.

The remaining 15 percent -- consisting of four places along the border -- is still disputed and open to discussion, parliamentary member Abdumanon Kholiqov told RFE/RL's Tajik Service.

Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrohkhon Zarifi said he has asked Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to allow a Tajik-Uzbek commission access to Soviet archives to help resolve the rest of the border.

The Uzbek parliament has not yet approve the agreement.
