Tatarstan Celebrates Rubin Kazan's First Soccer Championship

KAZAN (RFE/RL) -- Crowds of cheering fans poured into the streets of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, to celebrate Rubin Kazan's first-ever Russian soccer championship, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reported.

Rubin Kazan's 2-1 win on November 2 over Saturn Ramenskoye gave it a 10-point lead over CSKA Moscow with only three games remaining.

Rubin Kazan is coached by Turkmen national Kurban Berdyev.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said the Champion's Cup will be awared to Rubin Kazan on November 9. Only three non-Moscow clubs have ever won the Russian championship (Rubin Kazan; Alaniya Vladikavkaz in 1995; Zenit St. Petersburg 2007).
