Tehran's prosecutor-general has denied claims that the son of opposition leader Mehdi Karrubi was arrested and beaten, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.
Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said on February 16 that no warrant was ever issued for Ali Karrubi's arrest and he was not detained by police.
Ali Karrubi's mother, Fatemeh Karrubi, said in an open letter to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 13 that her son was arrested while shielding his father from security officers during February 11 protests marking the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
She said Ali Karrubi, 37, was beaten and threatened with rape while in custody.
Nafiseh Panahi, Ali Karrubi's wife, told Radio Farda that the "plainclothes agents who arrested my husband usually act arbitrarily. In other words, they first arrest people and then they issue the arrest warrant."
Panahi added that two of her husband's friends who were detained along with him witnessed his treatment while in police custody. According to Panahi, they said he was severely beaten by police.
Panahi said that "through Radio Farda I ask the prosecutor-general to send a representative to our home to see Ali's condition so that others might be saved from such brutality."
During the opposition protests on the Islamic Revolution's anniversary demonstrators were attacked by security agents armed with tear gas and batons.
Many protesters were arrested.
