Three Insurgents Shot Dead In Daghestan Clash

MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- Police in Daghestan shot dead three insurgents who opened fire on them when they were asked for their identification, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The incident took place on August 14 in the republic's Derbent district.

Daghestani police have been looking for a group of insurgents who killed four policemen and seven women at a local sauna in the town of Buynaksk the previous night.

Daghestan's Interior Ministry announced that two residents of Buynaksk -- Nabi Migitinov and Magomed Gadzhimagomedov -- might have been among the perpetrators of the attacks.

A group of investigators and experts from Moscow is traveling to the volatile North Caucasus republic to assist local authorities in investigating.

Dozens of republic officials, insurgent fighters, and civilians have been killed in Daghestan this year.
