Three NATO Troops, Five Civilians Die In Attack On Kandahar Police HQ

NATO says three of its troops and five civilians have been killed in an attack on police headquarters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar.

Afghan officials say a police officer also died in the attack late on July 13.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

A statement from the international force says a car bomb slammed into the entrance of the compound. Insurgents then opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Combined international troops and Afghan police kept the attackers from entering the compound and eventually fought them off, but three international troops died along with five civilian workers.

The insurgents have intensified attacks on government targets as Afghan and international reinforcements move in.
