The Pentagon says the United States and China are to resume military contacts that were cut off earlier this year.
Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan said both sides agreed in talks in Beijing that military maritime talks would be held from October 14-15, followed by defense talks in Washington later in the year.
The agreement came following a visit to Beijing by U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia Michael Schiffer.
Relations between the two countries have been strained in recent months over Internet policies, currency issues, trade deficits, and Tibet.
China in January froze military ties with the United States in protest of a U.S. plan to sell $6 billion in arms to Taiwan.
