YEREVAN -- The United States is continuing to push for Turkish-Armenian rapprochement, as discussed during U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Turkey in early April, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports.
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza arrived in Yerevan on April 17, and Obama placed a call to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev last week to discuss the matter.
Vartan Oskanian, Armenia’s foreign minister from 1998-2008, said on April 17 that the Turks are at an "advantage" when they suggest talks because it publicizes their issues, like "European Union membership and the issue of friendship with Azerbaijan." But he said Armenia should “set a clear deadline for the Turks,” because "the moment the border is opened we, too, will start to draw dividends."
