U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell is beginning diplomatic efforts to try to save the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
The recently restarted negotiations were put into doubt when Israel failed earlier this week to renew a partial moratorium on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.
Mitchell has talks scheduled on September 29 in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
On September 30, Mitchell is due to meet in Ramallah with Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas who has put off a decision on whether to quit the talks until after a meeting with Arab leaders.
