U.S. General David Petraeus praised Pakistan's counterinsurgency efforts in a surprise visit to the country on July 12, his first since taking over as the NATO commander in neighboring Afghanistan.
Petraeus said in a statement on July 12 that "Recent events demonstrate both the common threat posed to Pakistan and Afghanistan by insurgents."
Nearly 150 people were killed in a series of attacks in Pakistan in the past two weeks as violence has also risen in Afghanistan.
Washington has been pressuring Islamabad to do more to help battle Afghan Taliban.
