A grand jury in Michigan has indicted Nigerian national Farouk Abdulmutallab on six counts for allegedly smuggling and attempting to detonate an explosive aboard a U.S.-bound airplane on Christmas Day.
The charges included attempted murder of 289 people on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight and trying to use a weapon of mass destruction.
Abdulmutallab faces life in prison if convicted.
Abdulmutallab has reportedly admitted to receiving the explosives from Al-Qaeda in Yemen.
He is due in federal court on January 8 for arraignment.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said others could be charged as the investigation into Abdulmutallab's connections progresses.
Holder said that "anyone we find responsible for this alleged attack will be brought to justice using every tool -- military or judicial -- available to our government."
