BAGHDAD (RFE/RL) -- Iraqi authorities are preparing for the transfer of prisoners from U.S. military control to the control of the Iraqi justice system, an official of the High Judicial Council told RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq.
Judge Abdil Sattar Albiriqdar said that the preliminary procedures necessary for the transfer are under way. He added that the Iraqi judiciary system will study individual prisoners' cases once they are transferred under Iraqi authorities' control.
Brigadier General David Quantock, the commander of Task Force 134, which runs US detention facilities in Iraq, said that the U.S. forces would begin to transfer prisoners under the Iraqi government's control in February of next year.
Quantock noted that the first batch of prisoners' files would be available for review by the Iraqi authorities on December 15.
