ODESA, Ukraine -- Communists in the Black Sea city of Odesa plan to erect a monument to Soviet leader Josef Stalin later this year, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Yevhen Tsarkov, the first secretary of the Ukrainian Communist Party's regional committee in Odesa, told journalists on April 21 that the Communists are currently holding talks with local authorities about the plan.
He said construction of the Stalin monument will be financed by donations and that it should be in place by November 7.
He did not say how much it would cost or where it would be erected.
November 7 was marked during the Soviet era as Great Socialist Revolution Day.
In March, Communists in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya announced that they plan to unveil a Stalin monument by May 9, the 65th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
The Ukrainian cabinet said then that it will not obstruct the plans in order "to avoid exacerbating controversy."
