Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met today with his Ukrainian counterpart, Viktor Yanukovych, during a visit to Ukraine focused on aerospace and energy cooperation.
The two leaders signed an agreement opening Venezuelan oil and gas fields for development by Ukraine's state-owned energy companies, and confirmed that Ukraine would act as transit route for Venezuelan oil shipped to Belarus.
"As for the transportation of Venezuelan oil to Belarus, we will transport as much oil as we get at Ukraine's Black Sea ports," Yanukovych said at a news conference today. "I will not talk about the amount. I will just say that for now, we will transport this in oil tanks, but in the near future we will transport it through the oil pipeline."
Chavez was scheduled later to tour the Antonov aircraft assembly plant in the capital, Kyiv.
The Venezuelan leader is scheduled to travel next to Iran, Syria, and Portugal.
