Violence Intensifies In Russia's North Caucasus

NAZRAN/MAKHACHKALA, Russia -- Two police officers were severely wounded by unknown attackers in Ingushetia on June 15, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The incident took place in Nazran's Nasyr-Kort district. The wounded policemen were hospitalized.

Meanwhile, the body of well-known Muslim cleric Abdurakhman Kartoyev was found in Ingushetia with a gunshot wound to his head.

Kartoyev, 85, went missing on June 5.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing.

On June 13, Bashir Aushev, a career Ingush Interior Ministry officer who retired late last year as deputy prime minister with responsibility for law enforcement and security, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting outside his home in Nazran.

Ingushetian President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov blamed the killing on Islamic militants.

In Daghestan, another restive republic in Russia's North Caucasus, a passerby was shot dead on June 15 in a shoot-out between police and two unknown gunmen.

Last week, gunmen assassinated Aza Gazgireyeva, deputy chair of Ingushetia's Supreme Court.

On June 5, Daghestan's Interior Minister Adilgirey Magomedtagirov was shot dead by a sniper in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.
