Afghan Governor Attacked; Taliban Rocket Kills, Injures Children

Three people were killed and three injured when a group of gunmen wearing police uniforms attacked a convoy carrying Paktia Governor Joma Khan Hamdard.

The attack in northern Balkh Province came as Hamdard's convoy was traveling from Mazar-e Sharif to Kabul.

It happened on the outskirts of Mazar-e Sharif.

Three of Hamdard's bodyguards were killed in the hourlong shoot-out that ensued, though the governor was not harmed.

A policeman and two bodyguards were also injured in the fighting.

Meanwhile, Afghan officials say a small child was killed and five children injured in a house that was shelled by Taliban insurgents in eastern Afghanistan.

A spokesman for Nangarhar's governor said the victims were from the same family living in a remote village in the Mohmand Dara district.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
