Afghan Lawmakers Reject First-Ever Female Supreme Court Nominee

Afghanistan’s parliament has rejected the country’s first-ever female nominee for the Supreme Court.

Anisa Rasoli received 88 votes of support from parliamentary deputies on July 8, failing to gather the 97 votes needed for her nomination to be approved.

Zahir Qadir, the deputy speaker of parliament who was chairing the session, has asked President Ashraf Ghani to submit another nominee.

During the same session, the parliament confirmed Mohammad Yasuf Halim as a new Supreme Court justice and approved the nomination of Khalilulah Sediq as the governor of Afghanistan’s central bank.
