11 Afghan Police Reported Killed In Air Strike

Afghan officials say an air strike has killed at least 11 police officers in the volatile southern province of Helmand.

An unidentified Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said the strike on September 6 was carried out by NATO forces.

The alliance said in a statement that it conducted no air strikes in the province that day.

One official said the strike came during an operation that was meant to arrest drug smugglers. He was quoted as saying four officers from the Interior Ministry's antinarcotics department were also wounded in the incident.

Afghanistan s the world's largest producer of opium, which is refined to produce heroin.
