KABUL -- Authorities in Afghanistan are investigating reports of a plane crash overnight in Wardak Province, southwest of Kabul.
Attaullah Khogiani, a spokesman for the governor of Wardak Province, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that local residents reported seeing four people parachuting from a four-engine propeller aircraft before it went down in Dai Mirdad district, a mountainous region that is blanketed by heavy snow.
Their whereabouts are unknown.
The cause of the reported crash is not known.
It is also unclear whether the airplane was a military or commercial aircraft, although some reports said it was a cargo plane.
The NATO-led coalition in Aghanistan said it is aware of the reports but that there is no indication the plane belonged to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
It reported no insurgent activity in the area at the time.
