A loud explosion has rocked central Kabul, followed by bursts of gunfire.
Initial reports suggest gunmen entered a guest house in the Sherpour area, which houses foreign embassies, in the evening of December 11, following a suicide attack.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the explosion appeared to have come from a car bomb.
There were no immediate details of any damage or casualties.
Police have cordoned off the area.
The attack comes after President Ashraf Ghani returned from a regional peace conference in Islamabad aimed at reviving stalled peace talks with the Taliban.
It also follows an attack this week on the country's second-largest military base, Kandahar Airfield, in which more than 50 people were killed.
