Bomb Kills Several Afghan Police Officers

Local officials say eight police officers have been killed in a roadside bomb attack in the eastern Afghan province of Logar.

Deputy police chief Rais Khan Sadeq told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan the policemen were on a joint patrol with NATO-led forces on May 2 when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the militant group was responsible for the attack near the provincial capital, Puli Alam.

It comes days after Taliban insurgents announced the start of a spring offensive.

On May 1, a member of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, which is trying to negotiate with the Taliban, was ambushed and killed in the Helmand Province along with two bodyguards.

Three British soldiers were also killed in that province on the same day when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.
