Car Bomb Kills At Least 89 In Eastern Afghanistan

Afghan security personnel are pictured past mangled cars at the scene of a suicide attack at a busy market in Urgun district, Paktika Province, on July 15.

At least 89 people are reported dead after a car bomb exploded at a market in Afghanistan's eastern Paktika Province.

General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said 42 others were wounded on July 15 in the suicide attack, which destroyed some 20 shops at the market.

Azimi said the military had sent helicopters to bring the wounded to the hospital in Sharan, the provincial capital.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion in Paktika came the same day a roadside bomb in eastern Kabul killed two employees of the presidential palace.

The explosion struck a minivan carrying seven staffers of the palace's media office.

The blast killed two passengers and also wounded five people.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.
