KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Violence has broken out at an anti-Pakistan demonstration in southern Afghanistan, with reports of at least 11 dead.

Hundreds of Afghans gathered on May 8 in Kandahar Province's Maiwand district to protest the recent armed clashes between Afghan and Pakistani forces along a disputed border.

Provincial administration spokesman Jawed Faisal told RFE/RL that Taliban militants mixed in with the crowd and started firing at police.

Faisal said eight Taliban gunmen were killed and three drivers were killed when their car was set on fire.

On May 7, Afghan protesters also marched through the streets of Kandahar chanting "Death to Pakistan."

A firefight between Afghan and Pakistani forces last week left one Afghan policeman dead and two Pakistani soldiers wounded.

On May 6, there was another clash in the same region.
