At least three police officers have been killed by a Taliban attack in Kandahar Province, according to a spokesman for the provincial governor.
The spokesman, Samim Khpolwak, said at least four other officers were wounded by the attack late on October 7 in the Maiwand district on the western edge of Kandahar Province.
The Associated Press quoted other Afghan officials who suggested that the death toll could include as many as 20 police.
The provincial government's media office said at least 20 militants were killed when Afghan forces responded to the attack.
Afghanistan's vitally strategic "ring road" highway that circles within the countries borders passes though Maiwand in a segment that links Kandahar city with the town of Gereshk in neighboring Helmand Province.
