Afghan President Slams Delays in Bagram Prison Transfer

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said that any further delay in the handover of a key U.S.-run detention facility to full Afghan control could harm relations.

Karzai's statement on March 13 came after a meeting with U.S. commander General Joseph Dunford failed to resolve the standoff that derailed a scheduled handover last week.

NATO released a statement after the meeting saying both sides pledged to continue talks to resolve remaining issues. The Bagram detention facility has an Afghan administrator but is still U.S.-run.

Washington wants to keep veto power that allows it to keep detainees in its custody if it feels an individual poses a continuing threat.

Karzai has promised that even after Kabul takes over, it will keep anyone who is a security threat in custody.
