Six Attackers, One Police Officer Killed In Afghan Attack

Six attackers and one police officer have been reported killed in an assault claimed by Taliban insurgents on the governor’s office in Afghanistan’s eastern Panjshir Province.

Abdul Kabir Waseq, a spokesman for the Panjshir governor, told RFE/RL’s Radio Free Afghanistan that a suicide bomber detonated a bomb near the office of the governor, killing the police officer.

He said five other suicide attackers tried to enter the compound but were shot dead by security forces.

The spokesman added that the gunmen wore police uniforms.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Panjshir is considered one of Afghanistan’s safest provinces. Such attacks have been rare in recent years.
