Thousands Of 'Peace' Balloons Handed Out In Kabul

Volunteers have distributed 10,000 pink balloons to residents in Kabul, after a day of explosions and gunfire in the Afghan capital.

The balloons were handed out to passers-by in the city center on the morning of May 25.

The "We Believe in Balloons" event was organized by New York-based artist Yazmany Arboleda, who has arranged similar actions in Kenya, India, and Japan.

Arboleda said each balloon contains a written message of peace from volunteers around the world.

The date of the project had been kept secret in order to protect it from any possible threats.

On May 24, Afghan security forces fought Taliban militants for hours in Kabul, after an explosion hit a guesthouse used by the International Organization for Migration.

At least eight people were killed in the violence, including militants, guards, and civilians.
