A suicide attack hit the French school in Kabul on December 11. The French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, said several people had been killed - though there were no French victims. A senior Afghan official identified one of the dead as a German citizen. Afghan authorities said the suicide bomber was a teenager aged 15-16, who had hidden the explosives in his underwear. The school is one of Kabul's oldest and most respected, and is guarded by the Afghan army. The attack came several hours after a suicide bombing elsewhere in Kabul that killed six Afghan soldiers. Taliban militants have stepped up attacks as international forces draw down their presence in Afghanistan. Most foreign combat forces will have withdrawn from the country by the end of December.
