Afghan Rights Commission Targets Sexual Abuse Of Boys

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) is recommending that urgent steps be taken to stop the sexual abuse and slavery of young boys.

The organization said on October 30 that it will launch a national campaign against the practice, known as "bacha bazi."

AIHRC chief Sima Samar said that incidences of such abuse have risen over the past decade in Afghanistan.

She urged governmental institutions and the Afghan media to help the AIHRC conduct a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the problem over the next six months, noting that poverty plays an important role in pushing children toward becoming sex slaves.

The AIHRC is urging the Afghan government to take concrete steps to tackle the problem, an effort which it said is made more difficult by the involvement of influential Afghan figures in the abuse.
