Five people have been killed and at least 38 others wounded in a suicide bombing in the volatile southern Afghan province of Helmand, officials and medics say.
Omar Zhwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives in a parking lot near the main police headquarters in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, on August 23.
Provincial police chief Abdul Ghafar Safai said the explosion hit police officers and soldiers who had gathered to collect their pay.
TV footage showed several military Humvees destroyed following the attack.
Officials said those killed included children, women, and soldiers.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing, which comes a day after U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to commit U.S. troops to Afghanistan to fight against the militants.
The Taliban has a strong presence in Helmand.
Early in July, a U.S. soldier was killed and two others were wounded in an attack in the province while conducting operations against the Taliban.
