A brand new U.S. military facility in southern Afghanistan will likely be demolished without ever being used.
John Sopko, the special inspector-general for Afghanistan reconstruction, said on July 10 that he was "deeply troubled" that the military spent $34 million on building a command headquarters in the southern Helmand Province for troops that were never deployed there.
He wrote to Pentagon leaders that "this facility was designed for a military division that was never deployed and, subsequently, a decision was made not to construct the facility, but inexplicably the building construction started and is now complete."
U.S. forces and their NATO coalition partners and have destroyed hundreds of small and medium-sized military bases as they prepare to pull out next year.
Some bases have been handed over to the Afghan forces.
